Renowned Cellist and Pedagogue Zhu Yibing to Join the Colburn School Faculty in August 2026

May 8, 2026 – Official sources have confirmed that acclaimed Chinese cellist and music educator Zhu Yibing will join the Colburn School in Los Angeles as Professor of Cello in August 2026. This appointment marks a significant expansion of the internationally celebrated cellist's educational endeavors onto the global stage.

An Artistic Journey from Beijing to the World

Born in Beijing in 1966 into a musical family—his father Zhu Yongning was a pioneering cello educator in New China, and his mother Wang Yaoling served as a piano accompanist in the Orchestral Department of the Central Conservatory of Music—Zhu began studying the cello with his father at age eight. At thirteen, he released his first solo recording with China Record Corporation, becoming the first Chinese musician to produce a Western classical record after the Cultural Revolution. At seventeen, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he became the last disciple of the legendary French cellist Maurice Gendron and graduated with a Premier Prix—only the third Chinese student after Xian Xinghai and Ma Sicong to achieve this honor.

In 1986, Zhu won a prize at the 42nd Geneva International Music Competition, becoming the first Chinese cellist to receive an award at a major international competition. He later served as principal cello of the Basel Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland, one of Europe's most traditional top-tier orchestras, for fifteen years, while also holding the position of principal guest cello with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Germany. He systematically studied conducting at the Basel Music Academy and has led numerous European orchestras, including the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin德意志 Symphony Orchestra, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, and the Zurich Symphony Orchestra.

Twenty-One Years of Educational Dedication in China

In 2004, after twenty-one years abroad, Zhu returned to his homeland as a Chinese citizen and accepted an appointment as Professor of Cello and Director of the Cello教研室 at his alma mater, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Upon his return, he founded the first cello ensemble in China—the Zhu Yibing Cello Ensemble—pioneering the art form on Chinese stages. Over the past two decades, the ensemble has grown from six to twelve members and has traveled to dozens of cities across China, presenting nearly 600 public welfare performances at more than 500 social organizations and educational institutions, selflessly sowing the seeds of music in every corner of the country.

Beyond teaching, Zhu has devoted tremendous energy to popularizing classical music. His chamber music concerts, both hosted and guest-performed, have graced major theaters nationwide. He has appeared in numerous television programs and has released three critically acclaimed chamber music albums—the cello octet album Dream Journey, the cello quartet album Ave Maria, and the cello sextet album Wagner Feast, released in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth. From 2016 to 2022, he founded and successfully organized "SuperCello" in Beijing—China's first classical music festival in the new era and Asia's largest cello festival—attracting hundreds of world-renowned cellists to perform and exchange in China.

Zhu became one of the most active advocates for classical music popularization and music education in China. His playing has even crossed the boundaries of pure classical music: he recorded cello theme songs for numerous well-known films, including Under the Hawthorn Tree, The Flowers of War, Coming Home, and Fleet of Time, bringing the cello's voice deep into the hearts of the public.

The Colburn School: A Premier Institution with Full Scholarships

Located in downtown Los Angeles, adjacent to the Museum of Contemporary Art and directly opposite the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Colburn School is a distinguished institution of higher music education in the United States. Founded in 1950, the school has developed into one of the nation's leading conservatories, enrolling highly gifted music students. Notably, the Colburn School is the only music school in the United States that provides full-tuition scholarships to all students enrolled in degree programs. The school's cello faculty standards are exceptionally high; current cello professors include Clive Greensmith, former member of the Tokyo String Quartet.

A New Chapter in Sino-American Musical Exchange

Zhu Yibing taught at the Central Conservatory of Music for fourteen years after returning to China, nurturing hundreds of cello professionals. Before that, he was invited to serve as professor of cello at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris—the first Asian cello professor in the institution's 228-year history. His appointment at the Colburn School once again highlights his unique role as a cross-cultural ambassador in contemporary Chinese cello education.

For many years, Zhu has been committed to fostering dialogue between Chinese and global classical music education. In August 2025, he presented a concert titled "Romantic Fantasy and Jazz Night" at the Beijing Concert Hall, combining solo cello with跨界 jazz elements, receiving widespread acclaim from the industry.

Zhu is scheduled to assume his post at the Colburn School in August 2026. It is anticipated that this perpetually "rebellious" yet sincere cellist will continue to sow seeds of inspiration and kindness on the international stage. In Zhu Yibing's view, music has always been a bridge connecting hearts and minds across cultures—and regardless of where he is, his artistic mission to spread music and inspire the next generation will remain unchanged.
